      According to his application for passport, the reason they went back home:
      Treatment for my eyes, they having been hurt in an explosion in a mine in the United States. One eye was completely ruined, it being necessary to take it out and replace it with a glass one. The other one was unserviceable, but after treatment in Innsbruck recovered sight. I could not return to the United States before on account of the war. I did not service in the Austrian Army as may be seen from the above.
